Boley Family - Benjamin R. Boley

Information supplied by Enlow Ose

Benjamin R. Boley that married Evaline Sledd [Slade?] February 11, 1825 in Bedford Co. Va. This info was developed after finding that Anna Boley Garner, daughter of E. M. Boley, filed an application for membership in the DAR in 1917. In that application she claimed that her father was the son of Montford Boley [1800-1879] and Mary Boley [1813-1871], that Montford Boley was the son of Pressley Montford Boley [1766-1838] and Polly A. Boley [1783-1842], and that Pressley Montford Boley was the son of Francis Boley. Since some of these facts did not seem to be correct, I decided to research the matter further. In so doing, neither Montford Boley or Francis Boley has been found in any public records.

Evaline Sledd was the daughter of Barksdale Sledd and Lucy Peter who were married in Amherst Co. Va. in 1806 and who appear in the 1830 St. Louis Co., Missouri census. This Benjamin R. Boley is believed to be the one who appears in Bedford Co. tax records between 1819 and 1828 closely associated with Pressley Boley and in Bedford Co. court records in 1825 and 1826. This Benjamin R. Boley appears in the 1830 Franklin Co. Missouri census [10011-11001], in the 1840 St. Louis Co. Missouri census [001001-021] and in the 1850 St. Louis Co. census as follows;

Benjamin Boyd 27 farmer Va.

Almira 21 Mo.

Arabella 6/12 Mo.

Benjamin Boley 48 Mo.

St. Louis Co. marriage records show that Louisa Boley married Francis Boyd in 1848, Mary Ann Boley married Edward Simms in 1848, and Benjamin Boley married Patsy Hamilton in 1851. Jefferson Co. Missouri marriage records show that Eldridge M. Boley married Angeline Dover on January 20, 1854. The 1860 Washington Co. Missouri census includes the following;

F.. Boyd 35 merchant Mo.

Elmyra 29 Mo.

Arabella 10 Mo.

Jerome 8 Mo.

Theodore 5 Mo.

Benjamin R. Boley appears several times in St. Louis Co. land records between 1835 and 1854 when his estate was settled. Evaline Boley appears in some of these records. Jefferson Co. land records between 1860 and 1865 indicate a relationship between E.M.Boley and Elmira Boyd and they were probably brother and sister. Mary Ann Boley Simms probably was another sister.

Eldridge M. Boley died May 11, 1907 in San Bernardino Co. California. His death record, filed by his daughter Evelyn, indicates that Benjamin R. Boley and Evaline "Slade" were his parents and that he was born June 14, 1826 in Virginia. The earliest public record found on E. M. Boley was his marriage to Angeline Dover. No other info on this marriage has been found but Angeline Dover [16] is found in the 1850 Jefferson Co. census with her father John. E.M. Boley has not been found in the 1850 census and neither of them have been found in the 1860 census.

The 1870 Montana census includes the following;

Boley, E.M. 44 Sheriff Va.

Sallie C. 26 Ky.

Anna 6 Mo.

James B. 4 Mt.

[DAR records filed by Anna Boley Garner, if you believe them, indicate that Sarah C. Bryan married E.M. Boley ca. 1862 but no other record of the marriage has been found.]

The 1880 census of San Bernardino Co. Ca includes the following;

Boley, E.M 54 farmer Va. Va. Va.

Sallie 34 Ky. Va. Mo.

Anna 16 Mo. Va. Ky.

James B. 13 Mt. Va. Ky.

Evaline 2 Ca. Va. Ky.

and the 1900 census of San Bernardino Co. includes the following;

Boley, Eldridge M. Jan 1826 74 landlord Va. Va. Va.

Sarah C. Sept 1844 56 Ky. Va. Va.

That is all I have on this family. Although I do not have any additional information on this Benjamin R. Boley I am inclined to think that he was a son of Pressley Boley [1760-1838] and his first wife. I base this thinking on the 1819 to 1826 tax records of Bedford Co. where Benjamin Boley and Pressley Boley are closely connected and [believe it or not] on the DAR application of Anna Boley Garner in 1917. That may stretch a point or two but I do not have anything else to go on and this Benjamin Boley does not seem to fit anywhere else. If anyone has a better idea, please let me know.
