Marriage: Performed by Rev. J. W. Brewer at the Elm Grove Baptist Church
in Lamar Co., TX.
From the diary of J. C. Lee written January 2 - 15, 1946:
"J. C. Lee was born at a small village of Jalapa in Monroe Co. Ea
July 15, 1876. My father had bought a large tract of land through which
flowed a creek called the Conasogga and which made good pasture land on
each side of the creek. After I became old enough, herding my father's
stock in those bottoms was my job. In addition to this, as a hobby, I
fished several years as the seasons came and went. I had, as a young la
a very delightful time. I being the youngest of 9 children, 6 boys and 3
girls, of my fathers family, I guess I was shown a little partiality.
Also, I was rather sickly as I grew up, having one case of typhoid and
pneumonia fever which came on when I was about 6 years old. And which
left me in a very run down condition. After I was of school age, my
father saw to it that I was in school every day that I was able to be
there. Consequently, I received the benefits of the highest common
schools. At the age of 15, father sold the farms he owned on Conasogga
creek and moved farther east on Cane creek. In this community, there was
a Baptist church and a real good country school, both of which I
attended. At the age of 17, one summer night, I was converted(Born
again), joined the Baptist church and was baptised in the Tellico River.
A beautiful stream of clear water gushing out of the hills and Allegany
mountains of east Tennessee. I had a real good time of about 2 1/2 years
spent in this fine community, the reason I guess, this place is so sacr
to me. One reason was I come to know my Lord. Joined his church and
followed his leadership as best I could to the present time. The other
reason, I found a real nice girlfriend, my first sweetheart. At this
time, my father and mother decided they would still give me further
education. So we moved to Highvassee College. After one year, father and
mother decided to come to Texas. The other children having already come
out here. On June 6,1895, we arrived at the T&P railway station to start
a new western life. My father told me "Now son I have brought you this
far on your endeavor for an education, it is up to you to go further."
