ps I do know that Silas was a private in Co. I 63rd Georgia Volunteers
(thunderbolt Battery). I do have some copies of his civil war records.
This may indicate that they did not travel to alabama until during orafter
the war. i have not been able to locate him in any 1850 census.Email from R. L. Guffin rlguffin@stillman.edu
I have studied the GA Dobbs for about 38 years now and Silas S. Dobbs hasbeen a mystery to some researchers. But I am now quite certain that hewas the son of Mormon Dobbs who married Sarah Cape in Franklin Co., GA onSept. 25, 1814. Mormon was in Gwinnett Co., GA in 1820, in Hall Co., GAin 1830, back in Gwinnett in 1840 and is believed to have moved toCherokee County in the early
1840's. He did not show up in any census in 1850 though he was probablyin Cherokee County. In 1860 there is little doubt that he is the M. Dobbswho is living in Bartow County, GA (just west of Cherokee) as achairmaker. He was 70 years old and his wife, S. Dobbs, was 65. YourSilas was living as his neighbor at the time, simply listed as S. Dobbs, age 37, with wife, N. Dobbs, age 32, both born in GA. Silas had at leasttwo sisters that were married in Cherokee County. An older sister, JuliaAnn
Dobbs, was born in 1820 and was married to Sanford Vandiver. They movedto Montgomery Co., AR ca. 1852. Also, Sophia Dobbs, married WilliamFountain, likely a brother to Nancy, in 1849 in Cherokee County. My gggrandfather, Dr. John Royal Bates, a J. P. in Cherokee Co., GA performedthe ceremony for Sanford Vandiver and Julia Ann Dobbs. Sanford was hisnephew and Dr. Bates' wife was Mary Ann Dobbs. She was the dau. ofBurrell Dobbs of Cherokee County and I strongly suspect that Mormon andBurrell were first cousins. My best theory at the present is that Mormonwas the son of a Silas Dobbs
who lived in Elbert Co., GA in the early 1800's and moved to FranklinCo., GA around 1813. I will be happy to try and answer any questions youmight have. R. L. Guffin
