27. Richard Mentor Johnson Vice President (Colonel Robert , Colonel William , Captain William ) was born on 17 Oct 1780 in Beargrass, Jefferson County, Kentucky. He died on 19 Nov 1850 in Frankfort, Franklin County, Kentucky.

Richard Mentor Johnson (1780 - 1850) Served as the Vice President of the
United States from 1837 to 1841 under President Martin Van Buren. He wasthe
only Vice President ever elected by the Senate. In the election of 1836,no
vice presidential candidate received the majority of electoral votesrequired
by Amendment 12. The Senate then chose Johnson, a Democrat, on one ballot.
Richard was born at Beargrass, (now Louisville) Kentucky, and was thefirst
Vice President from a western state. Congress presented him with a swordfor
his bravery during the War of 1812. He was reputed to have killed thegreat
Indian Chief Tecumseh. Richard also served in the U.S. House ofRepresentative
at various times, and as a U.S. Senator from 1819 to 1829. Re: World Book
