11. Calvin I. Looper (William , Daniel ) was born in 1821 in Kentucky.
Calvin Looper was born circa 1823 in Kentucky. In 1850 Scott Co. TN.
Dist.18 census, Calvin was a merchant, age 27, with real estate valued at
$200.00. His wife, Drucilla is age 28, born in TN. Two children, Barbara,
age 4 and Anna age 1 month. Calvin is also listed in 1850 Morgan Co. TN.
census. Calvin was a County Commissioner for Scott Co. TN. and also amerchant.
There was a Looper that had a Saloon in Huntsville, TN. and we feel sureit was
Calvin. He also helped survey and lay out roads for Scott Co. In May 1853,
Calvin was appointed a Delegate to attend the Whig Convention at Clintonin the
County of Anderson to be held on the 12th of May 1853 and he was orderedand
instructed by the Scott County Court to nominate Horis Maynard as theirWhig
candidate for the present Congress.
Calvin was very active in land transactions in Scott Co. TN. Hebought Lot

and L. C. Cain jointly buy an additional 50 acres of land located on NewRiver
from Thomas Webb for $50.00. L. C. Cain must have sold his interest inthe land
to Riley Long, Calvin's uncle, because on Nov.22,1854 Calvin Looper andRiley

We have not been able to find Calvin and his wife Drucilla in an 1860
census. However it does appear they had 1 more child for we do find 3girls:
Barbara Looper age 8, Ann Looper age 10 and Rachel Looper age 8, listedin the
household of Barbara Hall or Hale age 70, in the 1860 census of MorganCo. TN.
City of Wartburg. Also listed were Sarah Schooler 24, Joseph Schooler 6,
Dorotha Schooler 4 and Barbara Schooler 2. It appears there was a closefamily
tie because in the 1850 Morgan Co. TN. census, Calvin and Drucilla livedonly 7
homes away from Barbara and her husband David Hall.
Calvin married (1) Drucilla Hall. The marriage ended in divorce. They were divorced in 1856. Drucilla was born in 1822.
They had the following children:
28 F i Barbara Looper was born in 1846. Barbara married W. H. Pow. 29 F ii Anna Looper was born in 1850. 30 F iii Rachel Looper was born in 1852. Rachel married W. H. Pow.
Calvin married (2) Sarah Lipe. Sarah died before 1870.
They had the following children:
Calvin married (3) Nancy Shoemaker in 1853 in McMinn County, Tennessee.
12. Joel Looper (William , Daniel ) was born in 1821 in Tennessee.
Joel Looper was born 1821 in TN. He married first to Elizabeth (lastname
unknown). They had at least 4 children: John M., Serepta, Hileah andWilliam.
We first find Joel and Elizabeth in 1840 census of Overton Co. TN In1850
Scott Co. TN Dist.18. Joel was a farmer, age 29 with Elizabeth age 27 and2
children: John M. age 5 and Serepta age 3. We have not found any landrecords
for Joel in Scott Co. or Fentress Co. TN (1850 Scott Co. census showsJoel had
$100 in Real Estate.) Scott Co. was formed in 1849 from Fentress, Morgan,
Anderson and Campbell Counties. Joel was elected Constable of Scott Co.TN in
Jan.1851 but he resigned in Jul.1851. He was a surveyor and overseer forScott
Co. TN from 1850 to 1854. On Oct.12,1859 there was a $252 promissory notefiled
in Scott Co. TN due from Bailey Butram payable to Joel Looper. Joel signed
it over to Nelley Looper, his mother, to collect from Butram by the 15thday of
Sep.1861. It would appear that Joel knew that he would not be in Scott Co.
to collect the moneys owed him. In the 1860 census we have not been ableto
locate where Joel and his two brothers, Riley and Calvin were. In 1870Clinton
Co. KY Cumberland City, Albany Dist. #2 Joel is age 49, a trader andlisted
with William age 16, also a house keeper named Jane Stritton, age 22.
On 27 Nov. 1866 Joel married Syntha Jane Carter, bond signed by JoelLooper
and Nathan G. Wells in Russell Co. KY In 1880 Joel is listed with wifeJennie
age 30 and daughter Mary age 9. listed also was a hired boy was EddyBrown age
18. We feel that Joel must have died sometime in the mid 1880's as itappears
that his widow married again in Clinton Co. KY 1889, Bk.7 pg.511. His

They had the following children:

13. Emerson Looper (William , Daniel ) was born in 1826 in Kentucky. He died on 19 Jun 1864 in Georgia.
Emerson Looper was born circa 1826 in Kentucky. He married Kisiah Ann
Thomas Sep.15,1851 in Scott Co. TN. (Timothy Sicle/Cecil, Justice of thePeace
officiated) Emerson's brothers, John and Joel attended the wedding. Theonly
census that Emerson is found on is the 1860 Scott Co. TN., City ofHuntsville.
He was age 34, a farmer with $100.00 personal property. Kisiah was age28. They
had 2 children: Martha born Mar.13,1853 and Joel born Oct.01,1855 inFentress
Co. TN. (In 1844, Isaac Hill age 66 and his wife, Jane Hill age 56 were
residing in Russell Co.,Rowena,Ky. testified that they were neighbors ofEmerson
and Kisiah in Fentress Co. TN. and that Jane was present at the birth ofJoel
in 1855.
On Jul.25,1862, Emerson signed up at Huntsville, TN. in Scott Co. forthe
Civil War, Union side, 3 years duty as a PVT. F Company 7th Infantry andwas
later transferred to PVT. D Company 2nd Infantry. On Nov.15,1862, just 4months
after Emerson signed up, his wife, Kisiah, died. During the Civil War,Emerson
and his brother John were both captured by the Confederates and sent to
Andersonville Prison in Georgia where Emerson died on Jun.19,1864.
The children were orphaned at age 11 and 9. Neither child would learnto
read or write. After the Civil War was over and in May of 1865, Marthaand Joel
were placed under the guardianship of Emerson's brother, John. SinceEmerson
and John were taken prisoner at the same time and John was not releaseduntil
after the War was over there is a question as to who took care of thechildren.
It appears to have been Emerson's other brother, Thomas. Thomas alsofought in
the War but was discharged Mar.1863 due to war wounds. Thomas requested an
"allowance of pension" from the government but was told "there was noexisting
law under which he can be reimbursed by the Government for providing forcare
of the children during first minority". John received a total of $459.43for
Emerson's back pay and pension funds for the children over the course of
several years. The government paid $10.00 per child per month until eachchild
reached age 16. Martha's pension started Jun.20,1864 and endedMar.12,1869.
Joel's pension started Jun.20,1864 and ended Sep.30,1871. Since JohnLooper
lived in Fentress Co. TN. until about 1880, that is probably where thechildren
were raised; however neither of the children are listed in the householdof
John in the 1870 census.

14. John Looper (William , Daniel ) was born in Jul 1830 in Wayne County, Kentucky. He died on 26 Jan 1903 in Clinton County, Kentucky. He was buried in Looper Cem., Albany, Kentucky.
John Looper was born Jul.1830 in Wayne Co. Ky. He first married MaryAnn
Cobb who was the daughter of Thomas Cobb and Sarah (last name unknown).John
was a Republican (Whig). He was a farmer and did not learn to read orwrite. John
and Mary's first 3 children: William, Thomas and Ermine were said to havebeen
born in Fentress Co. TN. After the 1870 census it appears that the familymoved
across the border into Clinton Co. KY where the next 4 children were born:
Scott, Ell, Joel Grant and John Gibbon (twins). Mary evidently diedshortly
after the birth of her twins from complications of child birth as theywere
only 3 mos. old at the time of her death.
( Even though John was living in Clinton Co. at this time he used Pall
Mall,TN. as his P.O. address until as late as 1889.)
After the death of Mary Ann, John married Sarah (Sallie) Smallwood.
There was 1 child born to the second marriage: James Edward (Edd).
John died Jan.26,1903 and is buried next to Mary Ann at Looper'sCemetery

John is located in the census file as follows:
1860 Scott Co. TN
1870 Fentress Co. TN
1880 Clinton Co. KYThe following information was provided by Shelbia (Looper) Lengel in a
letter dated 1987 to Teresa M. (Kothe) Reif of Oklahoma City, Ok.
"According to my mother (Minnie Edwards Looper) and other relatives
(remote) living in Clinton Co. KY,said John claimed to be half orfull-blooded
Indian. According to some, Sis Looper (wife of William S. Looper) plaited
John's hair for him. Paul Edwards (my uncle) said he was told that "Pappy"
Looper walked with his sons Indian style - one after the other accordingto
age. No proof of this has been found to date. Weather the Indian bloodwas real
or not, his sons certainly believed it. According to discharge papersfrom the
Civil War, John was 6 ft.1 in. tall, dark hair and eyes (black)".
John served with the Union Army in Company F, 7th Infantry of theTennessee
Volunteers. He enlisted with his brother,Emerson on 20 May 1862, enrolled10
Jul 1862 at Huntsville,TN. for a 3 year term. John later transferred toCompany

Battle of Stones' River,TN. and was captured at Rogersville,TN. He wasconfined
at Richmond (Belle's Island) and sent with Emerson to Andersonville,Ga. in
Feb.1864. He is said to have survived by eating rats and when he camehome he
was in bad shape. At Belle Island he was thinly clad and had only oneragged
blanket and had to sleep on the frozen ground without fires. He caughtcold
which settled in his lungs. It has been said that when he came home thathis
bones were exposed on his elbows from having to crawl on the ground.
