William Marrs by John Pyeatt Marrs, Attorney of Wichita Falls, TX whobegan
collection Marrs history in 1904 while a law student at U. of TX. His
information came from his father, David Franklin Marrs, who was the sonof Alec
A Marrs, native of Washington Co. Ark. ( Alec. Marrs is brother to Andrew
Jackson Marrs ). Virginia Tax list: John Marrs 200 A. in King WilliamCounty
1704: John Marrs, a Scotsman, was living in Virginia in 1760. He had twosons,
Hugh and William, Hugh being the older. Hugh married and reared threesons and
one daughter: James, Sam, Alex, and Catherine. Hugh moved to Georgiaabout 1784,
where Catherine was born that year. It seems that Hugh's wife was ofIrish
descent. I can remember Aunt Amanda commenting on the fact that AndrewJackson
Marrs, her grandfather felt that he had married a bit beneath himself bymarring
our wonderful grandmother Patsy Danley, an Irish woman.Proof of kinship as brothers for James and William Marrs is the marriagefor James Marrs and Anna Shannon which is found in Early Adventures onthe Western Waters by Kegley, Vol. II p. 308, 6th paragraph. It states "A letter, dated April 23, 1782, and filed with the Montgomery Countymarriage bonds, records that James Mears and Anna Shannon, daughter ofSamuel Shannon, planned to be married on the following day. William Mearswas to sign the bond for his brother James. All parties agreed to thewedding, but they did not wish to be married by Richard Whitt. WilliamChristian, writer of this letter, proposed to accompany Mr. Craighead(perhaps Alexander, a Presbyterian minister) to Samuel Pepper's where thewedding party was to be on the following morning. The marriage bond wasdated April 22, 1782." The same information is also found in the samebook on page 177 Marriage Bonds, 1777-1778. James Marrs is also listed inthe DAR Patriot Index Centennial Edition, Part II on page 1898, DARrecords say that James Marrs was born 1762/65. I question this as hiswife, Anna Shannon was born in 1753.
Alexander being the son of John has not yet been proven, it is onlyspeculation.
He had the following children:
+ 2 M i Hugh Marrs + 3 M ii William Marrs + 4 M iii James Marrs + 5 M iv Alexander Marrs
