Hi Carolyn, We've corresponded previously. On your "roll call" Marrsmessage
of 17 June 2000. Concerning Jane Marrs' hubby, Theophilus Blount: He wasNOT the
son of Needham Blount but was Needham's younger brother. Documentationfor
this is twofold: 1. Duplin Co., N. Carolina guardian appointments wherein
Needham is named as guardian for Theo, Edmund, Warren, Jr. & Major (notsure
about the last two (I'm writing from memory) and 2. A bill of sale from
"Edmund and Theophilus Blount of Posey Co.,IN" transferring title to"slaves
given us as a gift from our father Warren Blount" to our brother, Warren
Blount. I can furnish copies of documentation if you like. The storyabout
Needham being the father of Theo was spread by my late uncles: JamesLeonard
Carson and his brother-in-law, Pacific Hendricks. ONE BIG QUESTION I HAVEis
proof of where & when Jane (Marrs) Blount and Theophilus Blount died andare
buried? I've never found them in the part of Arkansas that Uncles Leonardand
Pacific said they were. The Day family moved to that area south ofMemphis
(James W. Blount's (Jane Marrs Blount's son) married a Mary E. Day inPosey Co
in 1840 or 41) but not the Blounts. Didn't Racheh & her family stay inArk.
awhile on their way to Texas? And there were apparent first cousins ofJane
who moved from Logan Co., KY to Washington Co., Ark.
I'd love to find Jane & Theo. All I have is strong circumstantialevidence
that James was indeed their son. Jame Blount's daughter, Marietta, married
Zachary Taylor Carson & is the mother of my grandmother, Cora, Herbrother,
James Leonard and sister Clara, wife of Pacific Hendricks. There is a
Theophilus Blount, age about 20 & born in Missouri in the 1850 Louisiana
census. I wonder if he is one of Jane Marrs' children? Bros. Edmund &Needham
went to LA from Posey Co. Edmund died there before 1830 and Needham movedon
into Mississippi.Sorry for running on so long.

Sam McClure's thesis on Ft. Shelton at Texas A&M Commerce, TexasROXTON, TEXAS. Roxton is at the junction of Farm roads 137 and 38,eighteen miles southwest of Paris in southwestern Lamar County. Theoriginal settlement, named Fort Shelton, was established in 1837 by JesseShelton on Cane Creek, three miles southwest of the current location. Thecommunity was known as Prairie Mound by 1853, when the first post officewas established with James H. Stevenson as postmaster. Prairie Mount waslocated 2½ miles northwest of the Fort Shelton site. The post office wasrenamed Roxton in 1869. The new name is believed to be a simplificationof Rockstown or Rockston; it refers either to a prominent white limestoneoutcropping located nearby or to a distinctive rock gate and posts builtby William Klyce at his home and store midway between Fort Shelton andthe present townsite. In 1887 the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway wasextended one-half mile west of the original location of Roxton in orderto connect with the Paris and Great Northern Railroad in Paris. Most ofthe town moved to the railroad soon afterward, and the original townsitebecame known as Old Roxton. Roxton had a population of 226 in 1890 andincreased to 1,200 by 1914. In that year the town had thirty businesses, including two banks, three gins, and a telephone company. The populationsubsequently remained between 700 and 900 for several decades. Roxtonserves as the marketing center of the surrounding agricultural area.Cotton was the original crop, but grain and cattle have since become themajor products. The town was incorporated by 1974, and in 1980 it hadtwelve businesses, including one bank. The post office, the second oldestin the county, was still in operation. In 1990 the population was 639.
