Thomas and Sarah had the following children:

Joel Looper was born 1821 in TN. He married first to Elizabeth (lastname

We first find Joel and Elizabeth in 1840 census of Overton Co. TN In1850
Scott Co. TN Dist.18. Joel was a farmer, age 29 with Elizabeth age 27 and2
children: John M. age 5 and Serepta age 3. We have not found any landrecords
for Joel in Scott Co. or Fentress Co. TN (1850 Scott Co. census showsJoel had
$100 in Real Estate.) Scott Co. was formed in 1849 from Fentress, Morgan,
Anderson and Campbell Counties. Joel was elected Constable of Scott Co.TN in

in Scott Co. TN due from Bailey Butram payable to Joel Looper. Joel signed
it over to Nelley Looper, his mother, to collect from Butram by the 15thday of
Sep.1861. It would appear that Joel knew that he would not be in Scott Co.
to collect the moneys owed him. In the 1860 census we have not been ableto
locate where Joel and his two brothers, Riley and Calvin were. In 1870Clinton
Co. KY Cumberland City, Albany Dist. #2 Joel is age 49, a trader andlisted

I found this in the Clinton County, KY Courthouse basement in October of1996. Spent the entire day combing original documents and this one wasin one of the dozens of boxes. If you have never been to the Clinton Co.KY Courthouse, the documents are a goldmine. I found several criminaland civil court documents for many of my family members. All storiesthat had not been passed down the line. If you are looking for skeletonsin the closet, these old documents usually can be found.

38. Nancy Pile (Elijah , Conrad "Coonrod" , Conrad ) was born on 13 Dec 1835 in Pall Mall, Fentress County, Tennessee. She died on 7 Apr 1919.
Nancy married William Brooks in 1865 in Fentress County, Tennessee. William was born about 1840 in Michigan. He died about 1866 in Fentress County, Tennessee.
From "Sergeant York", by Samuel K. Cowan, Copyright 1922, Funk & WagnallsCo. p.135-139. ""There came to Pall Mall, when General Burnside wasmoving his Federal forces southward, a young man by the name of WilliamBrooks. He had joined the Union Army at his home in Michigan. He was adaring horseman, handsome, fair and his hair was red - a rich copperesquered. The army moved on, but young Brooks remained in the valley. Heclaimed that as a private soldier he had done more than his share in theconquest of the south - and that the conquest that should ever go to hiscredit was the conquest of Nancy Pile."
"When they were married, his father-in-law, Elijah Pile, gave him a farmand he tilled it, and he smiled his way into the favor of the community."
"He lived in the valley about two years, and a baby had been born tothem. The feeling between the children of Elijah Pile and Pres Huff wassilent but tense; over it there fell constantly the shadow of the murderof Jeff Pile."
"Meeting down at the old mill one day, Pres Huff and "Willie" Brooksengaged in an excited argument. Between the dark browed, sullenmountaineer and the slender gay young man a contest seemed uneven and wasprevented. Huff told Brooks that the next time they met he would killhim."
"They met the next day on the mountainside, on the road that leads by theBrooks home, on across the spring branch, up beside the York home andthen up the mountain. Huff's riderless horse galloped on and stopped infront of a mountain cabin; his body lay dead in the road."
There was a hurried consultation at the home of Elijah Pile. Huff'sfriends, it was realized, would not be long in coming. Young Brooks wentout of the house, down by the spring, and up the mountain back of it. Hewas never seen in the valley again."
(For brevity, the author goes on and tells how Nancy Brooks later joinedher husband in Michigan. Still later, Huff's friends discovered theirlocation and had Brooks extradited from Michigan to the Courthouse inJamestown. He describes how a body of men took Brooks from jail, tied toa horse and killed as the horse stampeeded. - CEW)
"To Nancy Brooks was born a son a short time afterward, and he was namedafter his father."
"A silent, broken-hearted woman, Nancy Brooks took up again her life ather father's home. To the little girl she had carried on her flight toMichigan and to the boy whose hair had the copper-red hair of the father, she devoted herself. The girl had been named Mary, and she inherited thepiquancy and wit that had made her mother the belle of the valley, and asshe grew to womanhood the mountaineers saw again the Nanacy Brooks theyhad loved before war had come with it's cold blighting fingers of death."
At the age of fifteen Mary brooks met William York, the son of UriahYork, and they were married. A home was built for them beyond the branchbeside the spring. Alvin York was their third son."
William and Nancy had the following children:
+ 81 F i Mary Elizabeth Brooks 82 M ii William H. Brooks was born on 30 Mar 1868. William married Sarah Ann Crabtree on 16 Mar 1890.
