47. Mary Ann Cobb (Sarah Sallie Crockett , Delilah Lucinda Pile , Conrad "Coonrod" , Conrad ) was born in 1838 in Tennessee. She died on 12 Jun 1876 in Clinton County, Kentucky. She was buried in Looper Cem., Albany, Kentucky.

Mary Ann Cobb died soon after her twin sons, John Gibbons Looper and JoelGrant
Looper were born.

Mary married John Looper son of William Looper and Eleanor Nellie Long. John was born in Jul 1830 in Wayne County, Kentucky. He died on 26 Jan 1903 in Clinton County, Kentucky. He was buried in Looper Cem., Albany, Kentucky.

John Looper was born Jul.1830 in Wayne Co. Ky. He first married MaryAnn
Cobb who was the daughter of Thomas Cobb and Sarah (last name unknown).John
was a Republican (Whig). He was a farmer and did not learn to read orwrite. John
and Mary's first 3 children: William, Thomas and Ermine were said to havebeen
born in Fentress Co. TN. After the 1870 census it appears that the familymoved
across the border into Clinton Co. KY where the next 4 children were born:
Scott, Ell, Joel Grant and John Gibbon (twins). Mary evidently diedshortly
after the birth of her twins from complications of child birth as theywere
only 3 mos. old at the time of her death.
( Even though John was living in Clinton Co. at this time he used Pall
Mall,TN. as his P.O. address until as late as 1889.)
After the death of Mary Ann, John married Sarah (Sallie) Smallwood.
There was 1 child born to the second marriage: James Edward (Edd).
John died Jan.26,1903 and is buried next to Mary Ann at Looper'sCemetery
in Clinton Co. Ky. Sarah is also buried there in an unmarked grave.
John is located in the census file as follows:
1860 Scott Co. TN
1870 Fentress Co. TN
1880 Clinton Co. KY

The following information was provided by Shelbia (Looper) Lengel in a
letter dated 1987 to Teresa M. (Kothe) Reif of Oklahoma City, Ok.
"According to my mother (Minnie Edwards Looper) and other relatives
(remote) living in Clinton Co. KY,said John claimed to be half orfull-blooded
Indian. According to some, Sis Looper (wife of William S. Looper) plaited
John's hair for him. Paul Edwards (my uncle) said he was told that "Pappy"
Looper walked with his sons Indian style - one after the other accordingto
age. No proof of this has been found to date. Weather the Indian bloodwas real
or not, his sons certainly believed it. According to discharge papersfrom the
Civil War, John was 6 ft.1 in. tall, dark hair and eyes (black)".
John served with the Union Army in Company F, 7th Infantry of theTennessee
Volunteers. He enlisted with his brother,Emerson on 20 May 1862, enrolled10
Jul 1862 at Huntsville,TN. for a 3 year term. John later transferred toCompany
D, 2nd Regiment, Tennessee Volunteer Infantry. He fought skirmishesfollowing
Battle of Stones' River,TN. and was captured at Rogersville,TN. He wasconfined
at Richmond (Belle's Island) and sent with Emerson to Andersonville,Ga. in
Feb.1864. He is said to have survived by eating rats and when he camehome he
was in bad shape. At Belle Island he was thinly clad and had only oneragged
blanket and had to sleep on the frozen ground without fires. He caughtcold
which settled in his lungs. It has been said that when he came home thathis
bones were exposed on his elbows from having to crawl on the ground.
In 1866, Fentress Co. TN John Looper filed his Civil War dischargepapers
at the court house in Jamestown,TN. In May 1871 John and his wife sold 100
acres of land on Wolf River,Fentress Co. KY
