COOPER — Ray Banks Sr., 79, of Cooper passed away Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003,at Paris Nursing Home, where he received loving care.

Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Delta FuneralHome Chapel with Elmer L’Roy of Paris and Gary Kesting officiating.Interment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery in Cooper.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, atDelta Funeral Home.

He was born July 13, 1924, in Cooper, the son of Elisha Banks and IvaBrackeen Banks. He had owned and operated Banks Furniture Store in Coopersince 1952. He was a member of the Klondike Church of Christ.

On Aug. 18, 1945, he married Ophelia Preston in Cooper.

Survivors include his wife, Ophelia Banks of Cooper; two sons, Ray Banksand wife, Sue Banks, of Paris and Micheal Banks of Cooper; two grandsons,David Banks and wife, Susanne Banks, of Dallas and Jason Banks and wife,Lisa Banks, of Grand Prairie; one great-grandson, Joshua Ray Banks ofDallas; one brother, Jerry Banks of Heath; and four sisters, FrancesThompson of Paris, Louise Smith of Arlington, Jo Rita Powell of Houstonand Nina Lewis of Arlington.

Willie married Ophelia Preston.

THE PARIS NEWS, Sunday, July 30, 1995: 'The spirit of George LeroyO'Connor, father, grandfather and longtime Lamar County farmer, returnedto his Eternal Father at 2:45 a.m. Saturday while he was in the companyof his family at 2830 Clark Lane in Paris. He is survived by his wife,Mary Redue O'Connor; two sons, Spencer O'Connor and Gary O'Connor, bothof Paris; two granddaughters, Heather O'Connor of Dallas and ShannonO'Connor of Bedford, two devoted dogs and many dear friends andneighbors. Services will be held at the Sumner United Methodist Church at1 p.m. Monday, July 31, 1995. The family will receive friends atBright-Holland Funeral Home Sunday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. Mr. O'Connorwas born in Savannah, N.Y., May 30, 1918, to Richard and FlorenceO'Connor, and lived in Savannah until moving his family to the Directcommunity in 1959. Prior to World War II, he served in the Army MedicalCorps at Ft. Sill Okla., where he met and married Mary Elizabeth Redusbefore returning to farming in upstate New York. While in New York, hewas active in civic affairs as a Mason and member of the MethodistChurch. He served as a director of the Wayne County Production CreditAssociation, Justice of the Peace and Township Supervisor. After movingto Texas, Mr. O'Connor was instrumental in establishing the Logan-SloughCreek Water Improvement District and later in extending the county watersystem services to the Direct community. He was a loyal member of theSumner United Methodist Church. Mr. and Mrs. O'Connor celebrated their50th wedding anniversary Feb. 8, 1992. Mr. O'Connor was honored as theLamar County Outstanding Food and Fiber Producer in 1993.'
