Dear Mrs. Genzel:
I am Gene Shannon, Chesapeake, Va.. I went to Mercersburg, Pa. two weeksago and confirmed by research in the Franklin Co. courthouse that mygreat, great, great grandfather James Shannon (#4 child of William andMary in your geneology) was the son of William and Mary Shannon ofMercersburg. These are the NC Shannons of Gaston (formerly Lincoln) Co.,NC. My grandfather, a Presbyterian minister, wrote a history of the NCShannons in the 1930's. Although the family anecdote was that they wereoriginally from Mercersburg, Pa. the direct link had never been proven.
I am a lawyer and wanted to find out where the NC Shannons were from andwent to Pa. to check courthouses and historical societies to find out.
Your geneology is very painstakingly done and detailed but I wondered howyou determined that William Shannon of Mercersburg was born in Ireland. It seems from my research, although it certainly is not proven, thatWilliam was the son of William Shannon who died in 1741 in SadsburyTownship, Lancaster Co. Pa. That William was obviously an immigrant fromIreland and apparently a brother to Thomas Shannon who died in 1737 inthe same locale and who you have detailed in your work. It is not clearwhen William of Lancaster came to America and he could have already had afamily thus making William of Mercersburg born in Ireland. I would beinterested in any info you have on this and also whether you thinkWilliam of Mercersburg is the son of William of Lancaster.
We don't have a lot of info on James Shannon (your #4) but he marriedJenny Hamilton on March 3, 1785 in NC. They had 6 children, James,William, Hugh, Esther, Polly and Elizabeth. James was a farmer and servedin the Revolution in the Battle of Kings MTn, NC. He died August 5, 1825in Lincoln (now Gaston) Co., NC and was a Presbyterian. The only malechild of his three sons was my great grandfather James Robinson Shannon, who despite being a common infantryman (23rd NC) in some of the bloodiestbattles of the Civil War survived. If he hadn't survived the war the NCShannons would have been extinct.
I hope you find this of interest. My email is e.shannon1@home.com<mailto:e.shannon1@home.com>.
Best wishes, Gene Shannon
