3. John Withrow (Robert John ) was born on 7 Feb 1718/1719 in Pennsylvania. He died in 1796 in Rutherford Co., North Carolina.
John Withrow (1719 - 1796) came by the way of Virginia and Rowan County,North Carolina. He settled first in Rowan County, North Carolina then onthe Second Broad River tributaries in today's Rutherford County, NorthCarolina.
He obtained considerable land holdings on Cane Creek near Marlin's Knob, which was named for other settlers from Rowan County. It was in 1749 thatthis family moved to the new settlements on the frontier and on the westside of the Yadkin River near present-day Salisbury, North Carolina.During the 1760's, many of the settlers in Rowan County began to makeexploratory trips into the expanding frontier to the west and thus beganthe opening of the future Rutherford County territory. It was then thatJohn Withrow secured a tract of land on the upper Cane Creek near theMcDowell County line. Indications are that the entire Withrow clan hadplanned to move to the Cane Creek settlement about 1772. All of the groupcame at that time except John's son, Samuel Withrow.
John's son, James, was a "hero" of the Battle of Kings Mountain duringthe Revolution. He also served in the State Legislature for many terms. While James stayed in Rutherford County, other children left to maketheir way west into Tennessee and Kentucky.
