44. James Withrow (John , James , John , Robert John ) was born in 1801. He died on 25 Dec 1877 in Cleveland County, North Carolina. He was buried in Mt. Harmony Cem..
James Withrow (1801 - 1877), named after his grandfather, remained in the
Hollis Community. He was to become a well-known Methodist minister of the
community, and is buried in the Mount Harmony Methodist Church Cemetery
(est. 1791) which is just over the Cleveland County line from Hollis and
Duncans Creek area in North Carolina.
Possibly the most interesting of the stories of this James Withrow had todo
with the Civil War. Bill Withrow, of Hollis, and great-great grandson ofJames
Withrow, remembers that, when he was a child, his father sometimesbrought to
his home an elderly black man, whose parents had been slaves of JamesWithrow.
This man, Ervin Withrow, called Uncle Erv by Bill and his kin, toldstories of
the Withrow family in the Civil War from his childhood remembrances.
A Rutherford News article of 1937 carried an interview with ErvinWithrow, who
was 92 at the time and lived in the Laurel Hill area of Rutherfordton. The
interviewer wrote that Ervin Withrow had a wonderful memory mingled withjoy
and sadness. Ervin, himself, related that he had been a slave of JamesWithrow
of the plantation at Hollis. His master, he said, lived in a big loghouse with
two big chimneys. "Jim was a preacher, powerful and mighty." He went onto tell
how he helped care for James Withrow's sons when they came home from theCivil
War. "Mars Thomas was all shot up bad. And next they bring Mars Bill. Hedone
got shot in the eye. Then came the word that Mars Dolphus got kilt on the
battleground and poor mistes she cried and cried and walked out slow andsad
for a long time. And I remember when the war was over, but we didn't do no
celebratin around our place." Than Ervin Withrow told a story ofcarpetbaggers
and buried gold and silver. "We took the horses way up in the CherryMountains
and hid them and them carpetbaggers never did find them. We had nine bigcribs
full of corn and they tore em down and set em on fire. Mistes and Mammyhid the
money in the night, down in the ground right side Mammy's cabin chimney.Hit
were heaps of gold and silver but I don't remember there being anygreenback at
all. And they never found that. They fed them so they would go off andnot tear
down the place. I helped mistes dig up the money, and I pull out all thatgold
and silver."
James married Exrixana Rixie Caroline Wells. Exrixana was born in 1802. She died in 1885 in Cleveland County, North Carolina. She was buried in Mt. Harmony Cem..
They had the following children:
+ 71 M i William Withrow 72 M ii Jason Withrow was born in 1847. He died in 1920.
Jason Withrow was perhaps the most colorful of the Withrows during theCivil
War Era and after. He was a contemporary and an acquaintance of anothercolorful
character of time, the legendary distiller, Amos Owens. It has been saidthat
the Cherry trees on Cherry Mountain were there before Amos Owens, so itseems
that Amos did not set them all out as some people have claimed.
