Julius Plato Durham Withrow (1867 - 1926), called simply "J.D.P." or,sometimes
"Durham", became known as "the Merchant Prince of Hollis". The fame for
merchandising came from his operation of a general store which wasstocked with
everything from Bibles to plow-points, and including sewing machines,patent
medicine, shoes, canned goods, produce, nails, cloth, old fashion candy,snuff,
tobacco products, sugar, and even caskets. The store was a communitycenter and
drew people by wagon-load from miles around in Rutherford and Cleveland
Counties. In order to stock his store with certain goods such as cloth and
sewing machines, he would travel by train to New York and other places tomake
an order, and would have the goods shipped by train to Lattimore inCleveland
County, North Carolina. From there he had two wagon drivers to take thegoods
to his store. J.P.D. himself would take the wagon and work the roadsleading
to Hollis. He was very interested in the Hollis community. Besides givingHollis
its name, he and his family were guiding spirits in the building of theHollis
Post Office, the Hollis School, and the Hollis Methodist Church, allbuilt with
rock quarried from land owned by J.P.D. on Cherry Mountain.
Julius married Laura L. Hamrick. Laura was born on 19 Oct 1868. She died on 23 Aug 1925. She was buried in Big Springs Baptist Cemetery, Rutherford County, North Carolina.

1961, made brooms out of straw, cooked on a wood stove, dug sassafras,used
natural dyes, made feather beds, and didn't have a television until theirlast
few years. Their children have retained a love of the land as daughtersCleo
and Sue married farmers, and sons Pine and Sherwood have farmed inaddition to
other vocations; Pine in textiles, and Sherwood in carpentry.
