Flora & Wildlife
Wildlife viewing at Greenwood is fantastic. The diversity of
habitats and the associated rich flora harbors many species of
birds, invertebrates, vertebrates, mammals, insects and other
arthropods. Nature tours on the property are a big hit. Inventories
of mammals, plants, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, turtles and
insects are in progress. Of special interest are the endangered
bald eagles in winter and the interior least terns in summer.
Plants are the beginning of the macro-food chain and the productive
soils of Greenwood are the secret to plant growth and diversity.
Dominant upland trees are pine and mixed hardwood with a farkleberry,
bois d’arc, deciduous yaupon understory. The old river
terraces harbor large remnant chinkapin, bur and shumard oaks,
pecan and cottonwood. In the bottoms scenic groves of scattered
large native pecan trees dominate. The riparian bottoms harbor
eastern cottonwood, sugar berry, sycamore, black willow, and
rough leaf dogwood. The sandy ridges are eastern red cedar and
chickasaw plum. Spring and fall flowering plants are bountiful
and showy. The landscape is green in winter with winter grasses
and legumes.
