Hunting
Habitat diversity and wildlife management make Greenwood a hunter’s
paradise. Over 200 acres of ox-bow lakes, beaver impoundments
along Greenwood branch, levee system constructed under WRP, and
potholes provide a haven for water fowl and migrants. Water fowl
hunting is excellent. Puddle ducks such as mallard, widgeon,
gadwall, and wood duck predominate. The Red River and Collier
Creek also are integral to the abundant over wintering waterfowl
population.
A healthy white-tailed deer population with trophy
bucks is intensively managed. Greenwood is at the center of
the Arrowhead Wildlife Management Association,
which protects the young bucks and strives to improve the health of the herd.
Five, 8+ acre supplemental food plots are strategically located over the ranch.
Each plot is designed for summer and winter plantings and each is fenced to
eliminate feral hog access while permitting deer and other game
species to enter. Feral
hogs are numerous on the property. A feral hog
management program is active.
Eastern wild turkeys are abundant
in the upland habitat. Red River County is designated the Eastern
Wild Turkey capitol of Texas. Other small animals abound.
Cottontail and swamp rabbit, fox and gray squirrel, racoon, opossum, coyote,
armadillo and bobcat are abundant in specific habitats. This is one of the
few properties in northeast Texas with a healthy bobwhite quail population.
